FIRST Tech Challenge Team 542 Seniors Bernard Siu, Steven Ishida, and Cody Kim Pose In Front of the Robot and the Trophy. Team 542 was the Inspire Award Winner at the Los Angeles Championship Tournament and will be one of the representatives of Southern California at the FIRST Tech Challenge World Festival in Atlanta, Georgia! We would like to thank our mentors for supporting us all the way, and all the amazing and inspirational teams at the LA Championship which made the entire day spectacular and memorable. About Team 542 Team 542, Whitney High School Robotics (WHS Robotics), has been in the FIRST Tech Challenge in two years (officially) and has been working with the VEX system for three years. This year, 542 consists of nine members from ninth to twelfth grade from a variety of backgrounds. 2006 Connect Award Winner (LA Regional) 2006 Connect Award Winner (OC Regional) 2006 Second Place Alliance (San Diego Scrimmage) 2007 Second Place Alliance (CSUDH Qualifier) 2007 First Place Alliance (LA County College Qualifier) 2007 Connect Award Winner (LA County College Qualifier) 2007 Inspire Award Winner (Los Angeles Regional Championship Tournament) 2007 Connect Award Winner (San Diego Regional Championship Tournament) 2007 First Place Alliance (San Diego Regional Championship Tournament) Team 542 Members From L to R: Top: CJ, Cody, Bernard, Steven, Asif Bottom: Ian, David, Vignesh, Nicholas Cody Kim, 12th grade, Team Captain Steven Ishida, 12th grade Bernard Siu, 12th grade CJ Wang, 11th grade Asif Dhanani, 10th grade David Ankenbauer, 10th grade Ian Villa, 10th grade Nicholas Kang, 9th grade Vignesh Raja, 9th grade About our Robot Robot: UBOT Under Budget On Time Drive Train: 4 wheel gear drive built for torque Purpose: high goal Method of stacking rings on a lance and dropping them all, simultaneously Scoring: Scoring Efficiency: 80/100 Autonomous: Yes Autonomous Efficiency: 99/100 (pushes platform into alliance zone) Estimated Pts/Match: 40 Captain's Message The FIRST Tech Challenge is the missing link between FIRST's introductory FLL and the rather advanced FRC. That is to say, the VEX system has incorporated some positive and negative aspects of both competitions. Firstly, from the Lego League, the VEX system inherited it's factor of being a modular system. In the FTC competition, you are allowed to use VEX and only VEX parts. Meaning that, yes, everything works together. Simultaneously, it means that you have a very small selection of available parts. From the FIRST Robotics Competition, FTC acquired an elevated level of team-participation by requiring an operator during matches. This means that the team's job isn't done on competition day, rather that their duties are more-or-less doubled on competition day. Additionally, the game itself is designed to resemble FRC games or to at least be of the same genre. This means that the games are multi-dimensional, tactic-oriented rather than task-oriented, and overall rather difficult. The final, and probably greatest factor, of VEX is something that it shares with all three divisions: the necessity for gracious professionalism. Now, this statement – at face value – seems hackneyed and rather superfluous, but I cannot stress it enough. Team dynamics is an amazing factor in this competition. I have personally seen teams with decent robots, decent tactics, and decent techniques fail miserably due to poor team dynamics. And I have witnessed the exact opposite as well. In this competition, gracious professionalism isn't just politeness or some code of conduct. It is the external symptom of a team that doesn't want to win, but of a team that wants, yearns to just play the game. It is by far, in my short lifetime, one of the greatest human traits I have ever witnessed. It is the ideal of FIRST. This year, Quad Quandary has exemplified all of the classic FTC factors to a fault. As a team, we face one of the hardest games – in my opinion – to date, and have done pretty well so far. My name's Cody Kim, proud Captain of a fine team 542. Wish us luck! Team 542 was choosen by Beach Cities Robotics Team 23 to participate in what would be the winning alliance of the day. Team 542 also won the Connect Award at the San Diego Championship. WHS Robotics will be looking forward to working with other So Cal teams and teams across the nation in Atlanta, Georgia! Los Angeles Championship Tournament Team 542 WHS Robotics encountered many amazing teams at this rigorous tournament and ended up as the first pick alliance partner on the seventh seeded alliance. After two rounds, a tiebreaker, and a tiebreaker for the tiebreaker, our amazing alliance with RoboGenesis and Team 385 did not make it to the semifinals. However, WHS Robotics did proceed to win the Inspire Award and will be representing Los Angeles and Southern California at the World Festival in April. Amazing job, team! Qualifying Tournament at Los Angeles Valley College After a couple of uneventful rounds at the Los Angeles Valley College Qualifying Tournament on Sunday, November 18th, Team 542 was chosen to be part of an alliance with teams 72 and 1015. The alliance proceeded to win the finals. Team 542 has won first place alliance and the Connect Award! Hooray! Qualifying Tournament at Cal State Dominguez Hills Congratulations to our team and other teams at the Cal State Dominguez HIlls Qualifying Tournament on Saturday, November 10th. Team 542 was part of the second place alliance with a win-loss record of 3-1-0. Team 542 now qualifies for the Los Angeles Regional at Cal State Northridge. Good job, team! Team History 2006-2007 Hangin'-A-Round Team # 3395 WHS Robotics Won the Connect Award at two Championship Tournaments Robot: Whatbot? Our robot picked up softballs with a back loading scoop, was able to pre-load up to three softballs in a chute and score into the high goal one softball at a time with the upper arm. The robot's main purpose was to score into the high goals on the field, and it did so magnificently. 2005-2006 Half-Pipe Hustle (Unofficial)
